Culture & Strategy

The ability to execute on your DevOps strategy heavily depends on the quality of the strategy and your cultural environment. How intense are the conversations on DevOps and how fast do you move towards a consensus within your organization? How skilled are individuals and groups and can they apply the right methods and practices? Which relevant experiences can they reference? How motivated is your workforce to move towards a joint goal of Continuous Delivery and as a firm do you provide the right level of incentivization for them?

Automation

The ultimate objective of DevOps is Continuous Delivery (CD). CD cannot be achieved without automating the entire application delivery tool chain. This includes automation of build and integration, test and release & deploy. It is not only a question of implementing the right tools. Before tools can be implemented, standards have to be established, and processes have to be designed to be repeatable.

Structure & Processes

Organizations designed for agility and collaboration will significantly ease the adoption of DevOps practices. The extent to which Agile methodology is consistently used from product management to production release is an important indicator of overall DevOps maturity. Release processes, designed for repeatability and automation, are critical pre-requisites of each successful DevOps strategy.

Collaboration & Sharing

Dev and ops have to work closely together with common goals for the delivery of applications. They need to share their knowledge of applications and processes and use a standard set of tools. For a particular purpose - such as the deployment of an application - a single method and tool should be used regardless of which department is performing the activity. Close interaction with the release process and timely sharing of information is required to ensure everybody can do their job.
